Off to school

August 28, 2008

So that’s it … all of my munchkins have started school as of today. Well, that is if you can count 2 hours at preschool starting school. I mean it was so short that I couldn’t even really run an errand. I did get the house to myself for that time which was very exciting. I hardly knew what to do. Luckily that only lasted about 10 seconds.

It is supposed to extend to 3 hours for my youngest next week. I joke but it’s a big day nonetheless. I was very proud of my little man for taking this big step. One small step for my family one giant step for my little tot. Okay that makes no sense clearly time to move on to the next thought.

I hope that all my clients have had similar good starts to the school year.

Did you know that Jady Images celebrates it’s birthday or is it the anniversary in September? Well it’s true. Several years ago now we opened our doors. Of course, then the door I opened was my front door so things have changed a bit … but it’s all good. But is it a birthday or an anniversary. Let me know what you think.

This will help me name the upcoming birthday or anniversary special (as you can probably guess).

Thanks for your help – A

Goodbye Summer Olympics

August 25, 2008

So, I like the Olympics. Even when the events aren’t live I give in to the network pressure and watch some every night. I’m glad that they are only every 4 years because otherwise I’d be more annoyed by the inconvenience. But there are some things that I wonder about. For example, who is watching synchronized diving. I find diving impressive but synchronized diving … I just don’t get it. And Synchronized swimming … I’m confused by this — how can something that involves choreography be called a sport? Of course, I watched the men’s marathon. I know that’s boring for a lot of people but it’s my sport of choice so I loved it.

The last thing I wonder about is why don’t they just run the event’s live. I mean it works for the world cup. If I want to watch an event I’d just rather see it live than in prime time. I know that the networks probably aren’t listening to me but I just happen to think it would be better.

Okay off my soapbox…more later.

Motoring with Faye

August 22, 2008

So, as most people know I’m lucky enough to spend a chunk of my summer in the Berkshire Mountains of New York. It’s great.  The only downside is that at end of the summer I have to get myself and my summer crew home to start school. This year our plan was to try the Auto Train.  This is a train that runs from DC to Orlando and your car rides along with you. Seemed like a good plan. However, due to Faye, Amtrak decided  to cancel my train.  Not delay — CANCEL.  The next train was tentatively two days later. Did I mention that my step-daughter was with me and  needed to get home on a deadline? I will admit that initially I thought that the Amtrak decision was a little wimpy … but with hindsight being 20-20 and seeing all the flooding I will say that it was the right decision. I would have been even more irked to have been derailed somewhere in north-central Florida. So, the plan became that I would drive all the way home. Yikes what a mess.

At least the directions were simple … head South on 95 … until it ends :-)

On the last day I had to drive through Faye who did not go quite as far off shore as I would have liked. But truthfully once I remembered that one cannot put any faith in what the tv weather people say I wasn’t too freaked out.  I may have been a little cranky. Around Jacksonville I announced that everyone needed to take a potty break because we wouldn’t be stopping until the other side of the storm — that was probably a ridiculous announcement. It was about 4 hours of fairly heavy rain but the winds weren’t actually too bad.

And 2 and a half days after we started we made it home — finally.

That’s the update. — More later! A

So, I’m trying to get back into the swing of regular blogging now that summer is winding down. This actually came from an email I got from PaperBack Swap which is an online book swap that I’ve signed up for but haven’t tried.

Little-known fact about August: it is a thief!  The months used to alternate between 30 and 31 days all through the calendar, but when the Romans decided to give Caesar Augustus a month, they didn’t want to annoy him (= they did not want to be beheaded) by giving him a shorter month than Julius Caesar’s month that fell before his.  So, poor February shuffled up and sacrificed a day to prevent an Imperial Tantrum.   And September had a day wrested away from her too, so there would not be four “long” months in a row.    The Romans were all about symmetry.  And um, not getting beheaded.

In modern times, August is the Dog Days of Summer, the last gasp before Back-to-School.  It boasts National Wiggle-Your-Toes Day and National Blame-Someone-Else Day and National Book Lovers’ Day!  Not to mention Sneak-Some-Zucchini-Onto-Your-Neighbor’s-Porch Night, which is always a rollicking good time.

More random information later :-)
