* when i grow up *

July 7, 2009

One of my favorite things about being a photographer is that I get to meet all kinds of people. What’s wild is that I had already met this person and then I got to learn something new about them which I also love.

I discovered that this client was a body builder … which explains how she has the most awesome arm definition I may have ever seen. Seriously, when I grow up I want to have arms that are as phenomenal as hers. Wait … I am grown up. Okay … back to the gym.

This image also highlights my new crazy orange paper. I think it’s totally fab. Let me know what you think!

Until tomorrow – A

So, my kids are out of school … summer is here … the rainy season is here. What other updates do I have? Oh, this is Memorial Day Weekend — everybody have a safe and happy weekend. I hope the weather improves.

Here is a way overdue preview. Some of my favorites from a park – part deux of a session where part one was rained out.

So, this I think is proof that I have not totally disappeared from the planet but admittedly am a little behind. Catch up begins now.

Part 2 – What to wear

This section will have many sub-parts. The first is a general section.

What to wear … generally speaking
This is the most common question I get and it’s a hard one to answer actually. I don’t particularly consider myself a fashion expert although I know what I like when I see it. Also, I will say that over the years I am almost always super impressed with how fabulous my clients come ready for their sessions. I think that you’ll do a better job going through your wardrobe or shopping than I would. Nevertheless I’ll give you some basic tips.

Keep in mind that none of these are “rules” and for every suggestion I give you I could probably think of a time where a client had successfully broken that rule. So – use your own judgment.

The short answer is to wear something that you like and that you think looks good on you. You probably don’t want to wear something that you wouldn’t normally wear. Which is not to say that you should come in a sweat suit and sneakers. But if you don’t normally wear a short dress and you’re not comfortable in a short dress that discomfort will show through in your portraits.

If you’re coming into the studio I do suggest that at least one outfit includes either black shirts and jeans or white shirts and jeans.

Now here are some more general tips:

  •     Plain is better than bold patterns in most cases
  •     Wear clothes that are comfortable. During the session you’ll be standing sitting, bending and maybe even jumping or whatever we  decide to do. You don’t want to be limited by your outfit.
  •     Bring more than one outfit
  •     Jeans are great.
  •     Chinos are great.

More later – turn in next time for newborn dressing tips.

I hope that overall I create portraits that thrill my clients. But one thing that I’m working on at the moment is creating a concise guide to deliver to my clients to help them prepare for their portrait sessions. I’m going to post these items here on the blog so that they are a continuing resource for clients.

So stay tuned over the next few days, weeks as these tips are posted. Let me know what you think of this new feature of the blog. I hope that you find it helpful.

Tune in tomorrow for the first installment – “What makes a perfect portrait?”
